Books Read & Little Library On-line for Winnipeg Peeps

By popular demand (meaning one or two friends suggested it and I'm trying to put off some important task or other, so decided how better to waste my time than to start a blog); here's my first contribution to an on-line version of Little Library, a.k.a. my latest stack of books to lend.

For my Winnipeg peeps, or any friends from 'afar' who  may be passing through: will meet in person to lend - please msg a time / location - but let's make it a coffee date, k?  Or tea.  The more books you take off my hands, the farther I'll travel (ha!).

For virtual enjoyment, I'll insert my own reviews of each book, so this blog could also be used as a list of reading recommendations.  I would like to read your reviews of the same books, and would love to hear your recommendations for other books (because you can never get enough reading recommendations, right?)

Most of the books I have to lend are not new, in fact many are old, dog-eared & wrinkled, because, just like my pets & partners, I mostly adopt them used.  Often from shelters, or just off the side of the road.  :)

...okay, maybe that's another topic for another day.

Books I've got to Lend

THE NIGHT SHIFT

This is a non-fiction book - stories about 'life in the ER - by a Canadian doctor; a guy who does a spot on CBC radio sometimes.  I find this kind of 'behind the scenes' non-fiction interesting.  3-1/2 on 5.

STILL ALICE

Did you see the movie?  I didn't, so I read the book.  I hate to watch a movie and then read a book - I like to do it the other way around.  This one really made me think about how seemingly random debilitating disease can strike, and how impactful it is to be inflicted or to be close to someone who is.  A very good read; not sappy.  4 on 5.

BOSSYPANTS

So who hasn't read this book?  It's funny, I liked it. I like autobios and I like comedy.  Also (naturally) like the theme of working mom, so, I gave this a 3-1/2 on 5.

THE CURIOUS INCIDENT...

I know...you've all read this one, too.  I loved this book - it was quirky and I like quirky.  An easy read. I've lent this one out at least 4 times now and it's not falling apart yet.  I will give this one a 4 on 5 also.

THE PILOT'S WIFE

A decent story.  A bit cliche in terms of the lonesome heroic cop meets the widowed damsel in distress kind of thing, but still okay.  Not my favorite type of book. Almost 3 on 5.

These next 2 books fall in the category of "an oldie but a goodie". They both also feature in "Wild - from Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail" (the hiking author loves books, even though they weigh down her load). Wild is also in my lending library (see below).

THE SHIPPING NEWS

I didn't see this movie, either, but it's on my list.  This book is also quirky, sorta like 'Dog in the Night' and it's a very different writing style; choppy and harsh but also caring, which totally suits the Newfoundland setting.  Loved this book. 4 on 5.

A THOUSAND ACRES

I could not stop reading this book.  The subject matter disturbed me, even more so because it's written so well I felt like I knew these characters personally.  It's close to a 4 on 5.  Say 3.75.

WILD

I want to be a thru hiker now.  Also, I could relate to the author, of course, as a younger, wilder version of myself.  I really got into this one. Definite 4 on 5.
